How Nelson Mandela transformed South Africa, in one chart

Nelson Mandela’s life’s work is much too consequential to sum up in 10,000 words, let alone a single graph, but the above chart tells a very big part of his legacy. In apartheid-era South Africa, the nation’s black majority was understandably reluctant to say they were proud to be South African. Identifying with a country that denies you suffrage and other basic rights and dignities is difficult, to put it mildly. But Mandela’s release from prison, subsequent efforts to end the regime, and tenure as president changed that.
