The eighth annual ceremony took place last night (November 7) at the Victoria and Albert Museum. The US media mogul and former baptist minister beat out stiff competition from Niall Ferguson, Reverend George Gebauer, Scott Lively and Winston McKenzie over comments made on the Christian Network’s The 700 Club. He was not present to accept the award in person.

You know what they do in San Francisco? Some in the gay community here, they want to get people. So if they’ve got the stuff they have a ring, you shake hands and the ring’s got a little thing where you cut your finger. Really. It’s that kind of vicious stuff, which would be the equivalent of murder.

3. The Hero Award was won jointly won by Lord Alli and the Russia LGBT Network.

Despite this award being voted for by thousands of the organisation’s supporters rather than the panel, after three recounts, the voting was found to be a direct tie.

4. The rest of the winners…

Coronation Street actor Antony Cotton won Entertainer Of The Year, Grace Dent won Journalist Of The Year, CBBC’s Marrying Mum And Dad was named Broadcast Of The Year, Damian Barr won Writer Of The Year for Maggie And Me, rugby club the Cardiff Lions received the Stonewall Sports Award, while Mamas And Papas won the first ever Advert Of The Year award. Politician Of The Year was Baroness Stowell of Beeston, and Metro was named Publication Of The Year. The Community Group Of The Year prize went to the Quaker Lesbian And Gay Fellowship.

6. Stonewall Chief Executive Ben Summerskill said

In a landmark year for equality the Stonewall Award winners really do exemplify the very best of British. Each and every one of our winners has made the world a better place for gay people and will continue to inspire millions of people through their work.
