Notorious Drug Lord El Chapo Recaptured, Says Mexican President

Joaqun Guzmn Loera, the notorious Mexican drug lord commonly referred to as “El Chapo,” has been recaptured. Mexican President Enrique Pea Nieto announced this via a tweet on Friday.

The tweet reads,

Mission accomplished: We have him. I want to inform the Mexicans that Joaqun Guzmn Loera has been detained.

Guzmn was reportedly captured after a shootout with Mexican marines in the city of Los Mochis, located in the state of Sinaloa (which also happens to be Guzmn’s home state), AP reports. Five people were killed and one Mexican marine was wounded in this skirmish.

In July, El Chapo became an international headline when he escaped from Altiplano prison near Mexico City.

There’s been a massive manhunt for him since that time; his escape was a huge source of embarrassment for the Mexican government.

Guzmn, the leader of the Sinaloa cartel, is perhaps the most infamous drug lord in Mexico — a country plagued by drug-related violence that’s killed thousands of people. Accordingly, this is a big victory for the Mexican government.
